2020 Audi R8 Redesign, Specs, Release Date, and Price. It seems the mid-engine V10 Audi R8 has leaned even more into its Italian roots. Audi’s given the 2020 Audi R8 model of its range-topping supercar a thorough mid-cycle refresh, adding more power, sharper styling, and a few other changes to keep its most exciting car as exciting as possible.
2020 AUDI R8 NEWS
Audi Sport has been spotted testing an updated version of its 2020 Audi R8 supercar.
Previously thought to be a more hardcore GT variant, a source has revealed that the planned changes only constitute a mid-cycle update for the car.
The latest tester is wearing new fascias front and rear as well as large oval exhaust tips instead of the current R8’s square-shaped units. A pair of oval exhausts is a signature Audi Sport design trait so perhaps the designers have implemented them to connect the R8 with other models from the Audi Sport lineup.
The front fascia gets a host of new styling tweaks, including a slightly larger grille, a sharper front splitter with Lambo-like winglets on the outsides of the lower air vents, and three small slats above the grille and below the hood as a tribute to the World Rally Championship-winning Audi Sport Quattro from the 1980s.
Out back, there’s a larger vent area between the taillights and the rear bumper, and the exhaust pipes get more pronounced silver-line housings with a big rear splitter in between.
2020 AUDI R8 ENGINES
Audi Sport at one point was planning an entry-level 2020 Audi R8 V6 powered by a twin-turbocharged V-6. The model was to be aimed at markets with steep taxes for high-displacement engines, though the car is now thought to be off the radar. Audi Sport doesn’t even have a plan for an R8 replacement at this point as the company is looking into electrification for its future models and may launch an all-electric successor to the R8. Audi Sport will also launch the e-tron GT electric super sedan in 2020.
Look for the updated R8 to debut late this year or early next. It should reach showrooms as a 2020 model. An updated version of the R8 Spyder should arrive around the same time.
2020 AUDI R8 INTERIOR
The interior receives no major changes, but the 2020 Audi R8 does get more power in both the base and Performance versions. (AUDI).
The other hallmark changes are under the hood– or rear cowl, we should say– where Audi continues to proudly say “nein, danke” to turbochargers. The 5.2-liter V10 continues to offer in two power outputs, this time with 562 horsepower and 406 lb.-ft. of torque from the base motor, an increase of 30 hp and 8 lb.-ft. over last year.
As for the 2020 Audi R8 Performance model, it turns the heat up to 611 hp and 417 lb.-ft., a bump of 9 hp and 4 lb.-ft. over last year, so clearly the base model gets the better end of the deal.
In terms of technology updates, the 2020 Audi R8 keeps it solely performance-centric, with a number of software tweaks that Audi assures will enhance the driving experience, such as three new profiles in the drive mode selector for dry, wet, and snow conditions, and tweaks to the stability control settings that help shorten the car’s stopping distance.
2020 AUDI R8 RELEASE DATE, RELEASE DATE
The 2020 Audi R8 goes on sale in Europe early next year and comes to the States later on. Pricing will be available closer to release.
